Your money is safe and has extra insurance at PECU.

When some people first learn about credit unions, they often ask, “Is my money insured if I put it in a credit union?”  Of course, the short answer is, “Yes.”  What follows is more information about that insurance, plus details about how PECU gives you extra insurance for your money.

PECU is a federally insured credit union that is a very safe place for you to deposit and save money.  The National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) is an independent federal agency that supervises, regulates, and insures credit unions in the United States. NCUA backing for credit unions is the equivalent of FDIC Insurance for banks.  The NCUA was formed in 1970.  In addition to creating the NCUA, the government formed the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), and put it in charge of insuring credit union deposits. The NCUSIF is backed by the full faith and credit of the United States government and now insures more than 6,000 credit unions.  Through this coverage, your PECU deposits are insured to at least $250,000.  Due to this insurance fund, federally insured credit union members have never lost any insured savings.

To further protect the deposits of PECU members, we provide additional protection at no cost to members through Excess Share Insurance Corporation (ESI), a subsidiary of American Share Insurance, the nation’s largest private deposit insurer.  Through this affiliation, ESI provides PECU members at least $250,000 in coverage, in addition to the aforementioned federal protection from the NCUA. This means your PECU deposits have at least $500,000 of protection through the combination of federal and private insurance.
